Terrible Swift Word One day after the fact, Johnny Depp retracted his comments dissing America. Original Story, and The story after his agent got ahold of him. First of all, if you're going to try the "I was mis-quoted" dodge you've got to come up with something that we could reasonably imagine to be misconstrued the way it came out. To get from what Depp said he said to what the German reporter said he said, you would need much outright fabrication. More important, though I don't agree with what Depp said and I grow tired of celebrities who have no clue running their mouths without thinking, I can respect his right to speak his shallow mind. And, I can respect it when someone is willing to absorb a big PR hit to stand by their opinions. But there's the point. When you mouth off and then immediately back down after you see a backlash, that's just pathetic. That's saying, "I was thinking I could insult you and you'd still come to see my movies. I guess I was wrong, er, no, I guess I was mis-quoted." If you didn't think that, then why did you say it? And if you did think that, why did you back down? If you're trying to figure out what kind of meat to have on your sandwich, that's one thing. "Chicken .... no! Turkey." That happens. But when you're sitting next to a reporter, "I'm ashamed of America," is not the kind of thing you casually let fly. Thanks for showing us your true colors. Finally to all those who criticize the uproar over Dipp's comments: brain dead entertainers aren't the only ones who have the right to speak freely. "How dare you criticize him! He has the right to free speech!" And the critics don't? It goes both ways. The critics are simply exercising that same freedom. Current mood: Wow! Something to be excited about in Amercian mens' tennis. Andy Roddick is cruising in the quarterfinals at the US Open. Johnny Mac was the man, and there will never be another like him ... but Roddick is a guy I can root for. He's a breath of fresh air after the boooooring reign of Sampras. Andre is great too, but let's face it, he's been living on borrowed time for years now. Good to see Jennifer Capriati in the semis on the womens' side. Current mood: frazzled. |
